Anthony Barry Explains His Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach competed in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach win the World Cup next summer. His path from the pitch to the sidelines commenced with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his purpose.

Metoric Climb

His advancement stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he established a name with creative training and great man-management. His club career led him to elite sides, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour all the time, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies include psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights “Team England” and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he declares. “We want to conquer the entire field and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and set new standards. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We have to play a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly during that time. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives about the Premier League,” he comments. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To make it light, we have to give them a style that allows them to operate similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared now. They can organize – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo through midfield.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for improvement is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious about the presentation, especially as his class contained luminaries including former players. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments he could find to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club became Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he brought Barry over away from London to rejoin him. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
