The sport of boxing is experiencing a significant decline this year, with few major fights and considerably fewer compelling bouts than typical. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight battle between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the beleaguered business. The winner will with high probability face Oleksandr Usyk next year. In opposition, the unsuccessful boxer is likely to lament the certain decline of their gained recognition.

Parker rides a winning run since his most recent setback to fighter Joe Joyce three years ago. The quiet attraction of both men is amplified by the fact that they now stand on the verge of a championship opportunity. Yet neither is invincible. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, besides three setbacks, he has been knocked down on several occasions by various fighters. He consistently rises but Wardley hits harder than anyone he has faced – with the exclusion of Wilder who appeared diminished of a power puncher when Parker achieved a dominant decision win in December 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only started boxing when he was twenty, had zero amateur background and has always had to overcome skepticism over his skill set. But he is similarly close to a shot at the title.

“This is the biggest bout, right now, in the heavyweight category. These two guys have taken a risk when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Joseph is eager to compete regardless.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he merely needed to be patient for his chance. He said ‘No.’ He chose to box – and versus Parker because it gives him a chance to jump the queue.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “It's win or go home. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and his accomplishments and his preparation for this contest. But I am on a higher plane and I am intending to prove it on Saturday.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the both of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my boxing journey and the greatest challenge I've faced. But every time I step up I elevate my performance. Saturday will be no different. The gap between where Joe is and what others believe about me has been a common theme in my boxing life.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a long time, with a lot of fights on his ledger. Certainly not is he an aged fighter but he has been in the boxing world for a significant time and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the suspicion remains that Parker should prove too veteran, and too technically proficient, for his opponent. He should win a hard-fought contest with the belief that he is next in line for a title shot against Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a comfortable distance.
