The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
