The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
