In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Player Perks

The agreement includes a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16M for the 2026 season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• $1 million for winning the league MVP award.
• $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for finishing fourth through 10th.
• Another $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered salary escalators.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 soon, bolsters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, surpassing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out often, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing primarily at first base, he has more recently played to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The next night in the title match against the United States, he blasted a game-tying shot in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The new White Sox addition is set to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
