UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the main character navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Personal Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
